Our take

About Olakira Migration Camp

Olakira Migration Camp moves between northern Serengeti and the Ndutu area to follow the changing focus of the Great Migration. In the north, its wildlife focus includes the Mara River crossing areas; in the south, it is positioned for the Ndutu calving season and predators drawn to the herds. The camp therefore offers two distinct seasonal settings under one name. Canvas accommodation and stargazing spaces keep the experience close to the environment at each location.

The seasonal locations place guests near river-crossing country or the southern calving plains. Canvas living spaces retain a classic safari feel.

The lounge and dining tents use earthy colours with green and copper accents, giving the camp a warm contemporary feel within its portable design. An outdoor boma dining space, added for the 2025 season, creates a lantern-lit setting around a firepit on suitable evenings.

Accommodation

Rooms

There are nine tents in the southern location and ten in the north, with family accommodation at both sites. En-suite bathrooms and mesh-covered sleeping areas allow stargazing.

The northern configuration includes two family tents; the southern configuration includes one. Double or twin beds are available. Bathrooms have indoor showers and double vanities, while the mesh-enclosed deck extends the sleeping experience into the landscape. This is comfortable tented accommodation with the sounds of the bush close by.

Food & drink

Dining

Picnic breakfasts help maximise time outdoors; lunches and evening meals are served in camp or beneath the open sky.

The kitchen focuses on fresh produce and prepares food to suit full safari days. Bush picnics and lunches under trees keep outings flexible. Evening meals may be communal or arranged at individual tables, and warm nights create opportunities for dining outdoors in the boma. The outdoor firepit creates a separate setting for evening meals.

What to do

Activities

Game drives follow wildlife activity around the seasonal location. Optional ballooning and specialist photographic vehicles can be arranged; migration timings vary each year.

Optional balloon safaris provide an aerial perspective at additional cost. For guests keen on photography, we would discuss a specialist vehicle before booking so equipment and seating needs are considered. River crossings and calving activity are natural events rather than scheduled attractions.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

We would start with your travel month and then decide whether this camp’s northern or southern location matches your wildlife priorities. Three nights is a practical starting point for migration-focused travel; extra nights are useful when photography or patient time at sightings matters. A mobile camp works especially well when paired with a different style of accommodation elsewhere in the itinerary.

The right fit

Would Olakira Migration Camp suit you?

Who it suits

Our view: well suited to travellers who want to follow seasonal wildlife movements without giving up good meals and comfortable beds. The stargazing design makes it appealing to adventurous honeymooners as well as photographers.

Things to consider

The northern season is normally June to October, and the southern season December to March, with closure periods around the moves. Location and flight routing must be confirmed for your dates. Wi-Fi can be variable. We would check the exact family tent configuration and explain how the stargazing areas work before comparing this with a permanent lodge.
