Our take

About Ubuntu Migration Camp

Ubuntu Migration Camp follows the Serengeti’s seasonal wildlife movements, using northern and southern locations to give guests access to the migrating herds. Its northern Lamai Wedge and southern Kusini settings give two versions of the mobile-camp experience. Both are chosen around seasonal wildlife access, with a modest footprint and comfortable canvas accommodation. In the south, the hillside location looks over broad plains; the northern stay introduces a different landscape beyond the Mara River and opportunities for guided walking.

The northern site lies in the Lamai Wedge, while the southern camp overlooks the Kusini plains. Its portable canvas design keeps the experience close to the bush.

The camp’s central dining and lounge tents, shaded canvas roofs and evening fire create a small and sociable safari base. Its portable structure is designed around the seasonal location rather than extensive facilities. The emphasis is on guiding, hospitality and being well placed for the wildlife of the moment.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Ten tents include a family tent. Mesh panels bring in light and air; each tent has an en-suite bathroom, bucket shower and a porch.

Canvas tents can be arranged with double or twin beds. The family tent accommodates four guests. A sitting area and furnished porch give space to read or watch the surroundings between outings, while mesh panels allow ventilation. Bathrooms retain a traditional bucket-shower approach, which is part of the experience rather than an incidental detail.

Food & drink

Dining

Fresh meals range from light lunches to three-course dinners, with picnics packed for longer outings.

The kitchen prepares light buffets, packed lunches and three-course evening meals. In the northern season, some fresh ingredients are sourced through a nearby community programme. Meals can be taken in the open dining tent, and a picnic allows you to remain out when wildlife activity warrants a longer drive.

03

What to do

Activities

Game drives explore the seasonal location, with walking available in the north and optional ballooning in the south. Exact migration movements vary with rainfall.

Wildlife drives are the core experience. In the north, the Lamai Wedge gives access to walking opportunities; in the south, balloon flights can be arranged at additional cost. We would confirm the available extras and age requirements for the specific location rather than assume the same programme at both sites.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

We would favour three nights when Ubuntu is your principal Serengeti stay, extending this if wildlife photography is central to the trip. Its simpler facilities make it particularly effective as part of a varied itinerary, perhaps alongside a more substantial lodge near Ngorongoro or a beach hotel afterwards. Before choosing between mobile camps, think about how much of each day you want to spend out with the guide.

The right fit

Would Ubuntu Migration Camp suit you?

Who it suits

Our view: a good choice for travellers who enjoy the atmosphere of traditional tented safari and prioritise location over a long facilities list. It can suit a first safari or a return visit, particularly when the party shares an appetite for early starts and long wildlife outings.

Things to consider

Ubuntu normally operates in the north from June to mid-November and in the south from mid-December to mid-March. Transfers differ by season and can be substantial, so we would check them against your flight schedule. Children aged five and above are welcomed. Bucket showers, variable connectivity and a mobile-camp setting deserve clear expectations before booking.
