Our take

About The Retreats at Sayari Camp

The Retreats at Sayari Camp bring a more private safari experience to the northern Serengeti, near the Mara River. The setting is the same northern wildlife region that makes the main camp appealing, with the Mara River and resident game nearby. The difference is in how you live and explore: a self-contained home, private guiding and meals planned for your party. This makes the accommodation arrangement central to the experience, alongside the location.

Each stay includes a dedicated chef, guide and vehicle. A pool and additional lounge are shared between the two retreats, while the main camp’s bar and spa remain accessible.

The Retreats combine the atmosphere and facilities of Sayari with a more self-contained way to travel. An additional dining room can be used by a larger group booking both retreats, making the arrangement useful for families who want to gather together without sharing every moment of the day.

Accommodation

Rooms

Two retreats each contain two en-suite bedrooms, a central living and dining space, an expansive deck and a private firepit. Bathrooms include indoor baths and outdoor showers.

The bedrooms sit on either side of the central lounge and dining space, giving two couples separation within a shared home. Large glass doors open onto the deck. Bathrooms offer double vanities, indoor showers and baths, with outdoor showers tucked around the deck for privacy. Two additional single beds can be arranged for children according to the supplier brochure.

Food & drink

Dining

A dedicated chef prepares meals around your plans, with deck dining and safari picnics available.

A retreat host and chef organise meals to fit your plans rather than a fixed camp timetable. You can linger over breakfast on the deck or take a picnic for a longer wildlife outing. If both retreats are booked together, shared dinners in the larger dining area become a natural focus of the stay.

What to do

Activities

Private game drives seek resident wildlife and seasonal migrating herds. Guided walks are seasonal and subject to conditions.

Optional ballooning and specialist photographic vehicles can be arranged at additional cost. Seasonal walking offers a closer look at the landscape, with a minimum age of twelve and guide approval. Main-camp spa treatments give non-driving companions an alternative during a quiet afternoon.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

We would recommend three or four nights for a group hoping to enjoy both the migration area and the retreat itself. Private guiding is most valuable when it solves a real need: different interests, young family members, photography or a slower pace. We would discuss those priorities before deciding whether one retreat is enough or both should be secured.

The right fit

Would The Retreats at Sayari Camp suit you?

Who it suits

Our view: a strong option for multigenerational families, friends travelling together and couples who want a private safari home while retaining access to a larger camp. Booking both retreats can suit a small celebration.

Things to consider

The pool and extra lounge are shared between the two retreats. Sayari’s usual season is June to March; Kogatende is approximately twenty minutes away. Family occupancy needs to be agreed in advance, especially when adding children’s beds. We would confirm whether your group requires both retreats and distinguish included private guiding from separately priced experiences.
