Our take

About Lemala Tented Camp

Lemala’s seasonal migration camp uses two positions: Ndutu in the southern ecosystem and the northern Serengeti near the Mara River. The accommodation follows a traditional canvas-camp approach, with the location chosen around the season. These are two operating positions of one seasonal camp, rather than two year-round lodges to book consecutively.

The Ndutu position normally operates from December to March, overlooking the southern plains where wildebeest gather and the calving season develops. The Mara position operates from June to October in the northern Serengeti, under trees and within reach of the river area. The camp location is chosen with wildlife in mind without promising that a crossing will occur outside your tent. A communal lounge, bar and dining tent create the shared centre, furnished with leather seating, rugs and wooden cabinets. Solar electricity and an evening campfire preserve a traditional mobile-safari atmosphere.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Spacious en-suite tents have double beds, wooden floors, storage for safari gear and an outside deck with seating. Bathrooms provide showers and flush toilets, bringing practical comfort to a seasonal camp. Standard tents and two-bedroom family tents are available, with bathroom facilities in both family bedrooms. The Mara position is consistently listed with 12 tents, while published Ndutu totals differ; we would confirm the inventory and exact configuration for your dates. The value here lies in the seasonal location and canvas experience rather than extensive resort-style room facilities.

Food & drink

Dining

A separate dining tent provides tables for individual travelling parties, with a friendly shared atmosphere around them. Meals follow a rotating set menu, and dietary needs can be accommodated when advised ahead of arrival. Picnic breakfasts and lunches can be prepared for longer wildlife days, allowing the guide to stay with an interesting area rather than return to camp solely for a meal. Evening drinks and canapés around the fire lead naturally into dinner.

What to do

Activities

Game drives concentrate on the wildlife around the camp’s seasonal position. A private vehicle can be requested, which we would particularly consider for photographers or families who want their own pace. Balloon safaris may also be arranged, with the operating area checked against your chosen dates. For the best experience, we would build the days around what the guide is seeing locally rather than promise a particular crossing, hunt or calving event. The strongest days follow the animals’ movements, allowing time to observe their behaviour instead of moving immediately between sightings.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Choose the position around your travel month, then build the rest of the safari around it. Three or four nights gives more flexibility for migration photography than a brief stop. Ngorongoro or another Serengeti area should add a different experience rather than another camp name. We would check opening dates, airstrips and flights before adding a beach extension, and compare private guiding if the party wants a particularly flexible schedule.

The right fit

Would Lemala Tented Camp suit you?

Who it suits

This is especially worth considering for migration-focused travellers and photographers who prefer a seasonal canvas setting to elaborate lodge facilities. Couples and families who enjoy a social evening around the fire may also find it appealing. The camp position and travel dates should drive the choice.

Things to consider

Migration timing follows rainfall and grazing, and river crossings cannot be guaranteed. Published Ndutu room totals conflict, so we would confirm the accommodation directly. Seasonal operating dates also need checking before booking flights. Allow flexibility for waiting at sightings and changing the day’s plan, rather than expecting a fixed list of wildlife events.
