Our take

About Tarangire Treetops

Tarangire Treetops is one of northern Tanzania’s most recognisable lodges, with elevated rooms built among mature baobab and marula trees. It sits in Randilen Wildlife Management Area, outside Tarangire National Park, combining access to the park’s wildlife with activities in the surrounding conservation landscape. The appeal is as much the experience of staying above the ground as the game viewing: private balconies, open views and a distinctive sense of space.

The main lodge wraps around a substantial old baobab, creating a natural centrepiece for the shared areas. A swimming pool and waterhole give guests something to watch during the middle of the day, while local craftsmanship helps the interiors feel connected to their surroundings. The setting outside the national park matters: it allows the lodge to offer a broader range of experiences than a stay restricted to daytime park drives. The atmosphere combines a substantial lodge’s comforts with a feeling of being immersed among the trees, rather than enclosed within a conventional hotel.

Accommodation

Rooms

There are 20 elevated rooms, reached by stairs and designed to make the most of the view above the surrounding vegetation. Bedrooms measure approximately 65 square metres, with generous space around the bed and furnishings made to suit the treehouse setting. Open-fronted designs lead onto private viewing balconies, so the outdoor aspect is an important part of the stay. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with a double shower, as well as bathrobes, slippers, an electronic safe and an internal telephone. We would confirm the bedding and any additional-bed requirement before recommending a room for a family. The elevated layout is also worth discussing if stairs are difficult.

Dining

Dining can take place beside the pool, with the waterhole nearby, or in a lantern-lit boma under the stars. The boma experience brings an outdoor setting and Maasai singing and dancing together with dinner. Bush breakfasts and lunches can be arranged in selected locations in the surrounding area, depending on conditions. These settings help break up a stay that might otherwise revolve around vehicle excursions. We would plan special meals around the day’s route rather than add unnecessary transfers, and confirm which experiences are included in your chosen package.

What to do

Activities

Day drives explore Tarangire National Park, known for elephants, baobabs and a rich birdlife. Outside the park, guided walks draw attention to tracks, plants and smaller details that can be missed from a vehicle. Night drives in the Treetops area offer a different view of the bush after dusk, when nocturnal species become active. A visit to a nearby Maasai village and sundowners on Sunset Hill add another dimension to the stay. Walking and night activities are subject to guiding arrangements, local rules and conditions; the combination of park and surrounding-area experiences is the main reason to allow enough time here.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Treetops fits naturally near the start of a northern Tanzania journey, before continuing towards Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. We would usually plan several nights when you want both park drives and the lodge’s walking or night experiences. The exact arrival route and time needed to reach the park should be considered alongside the rest of the itinerary.

The right fit

Would Tarangire Treetops suit you?

Who it suits

Travellers drawn to unusual accommodation, spacious rooms and a mix of safari activities. It can be a memorable choice for couples or families who want a distinctive Tarangire stay with time to enjoy the lodge between drives.

Things to consider

Rooms are raised above ground and reached by stairs. The lodge is outside Tarangire National Park, so a park drive involves travelling from the lodge. Full-board and game-package inclusions differ, and park or wildlife-management fees may be charged separately.
