Our take

About Serengeti Migration Camp

Serengeti Migration Camp is a permanent tented camp beside the Grumeti River in the northern Serengeti. Elevated tents are tucked among rocky outcrops, with the river and surrounding hills forming a distinctive backdrop to a safari stay. The setting brings wildlife close to camp and a lively soundtrack from resident hippos, while the main decks offer places to watch the landscape when you are between drives.

The camp combines canvas accommodation with substantial shared areas, including a split-level lounge, restaurant, swimming pool and viewing platforms. Its position beside the river gives the lodge a different feel from a camp on open grassland: there is greenery, rock and water as well as wider Serengeti scenery. The Grumeti’s hippos are a memorable part of the experience. Guests can spend the afternoon by the pool or on the decks without losing the sense of being in a wildlife setting. Despite the name, this is a fixed camp rather than accommodation that moves with the migration.

Accommodation

Rooms

There are 20 elevated tents, each surrounded by a veranda deck that provides a private place to sit and look into the bush. Inside, wooden floors, upholstered furnishings and writing desks give the rooms a substantial feel beneath canvas. The bathrooms have fixed walls and include a shower, flushing toilet and twin vanity basins, with solar-heated hot water. A fan, safe, bathrobes, slippers and internal telephone are among the practical facilities. Wi-Fi is available in the main lounge rather than being the defining feature of a stay here. We would check bedding and any additional-bed needs when selecting accommodation for a family, since the published room offering is principally individual safari tents.

Food & drink

Dining

A separate dining deck looks towards the Ndasiata Hills and Grumeti River. Meals can be served beneath canvas or outdoors, making the surrounding landscape part of breakfast and dinner. Picnic breakfasts and lunches allow guests to stay out on a longer game drive rather than return to camp in the middle of the day. Sundowners on the sunset deck add a relaxed pause before dinner. Special meals and drinks should be considered alongside your package, particularly if you want private dining or a longer excursion away from camp.

What to do

Activities

Game drives explore the surrounding northern Serengeti, with full-day outings possible when the wildlife route calls for them. Guided walking safaris offer a closer look at tracks, vegetation and the smaller details of the ecosystem, accompanied by a professional guide. Walks are subject to the lead guide’s judgement and published age restrictions, with children under 16 excluded. Balloon safaris can be arranged in advance, adding an aerial perspective at additional cost. The migration is an important seasonal possibility, but good planning also considers resident wildlife and the time needed to reach specific areas rather than promising a particular spectacle each day.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Lobo airstrip is approximately 40 minutes from the camp by road. Flights from Arusha take around an hour and twenty minutes, with the actual journey depending on intermediate stops. Migration Camp can follow a stay near Ngorongoro or another part of the Serengeti, and a second camp may help cover a wider seasonal wildlife route.

The right fit

Would Serengeti Migration Camp suit you?

Who it suits

Couples and other travellers who want a comfortable permanent camp with a river setting, generous tent verandas and a swimming pool. It is particularly appealing when time at camp matters alongside the game drives, rather than accommodation serving only as an overnight stop.

Things to consider

The camp is beside the Grumeti River, not on the Mara River, and the herds move seasonally. Hippos and other wildlife contribute natural sounds around camp. Walking has age and guiding restrictions, and full-board rates should not be confused with game-package inclusions.
