Our take

About Mkombe’s House

Mkombe’s House is an exclusive-use safari home in the northern Serengeti, built around the needs of families and friends. It has the freedom of a private house, the support of a dedicated team and a setting overlooking the plains from the Kogakuria Kopje. A swimming pool, children’s pool and enclosed snug give it a different emphasis from a conventional safari camp. It suits travellers who want excellent wildlife country alongside space for children to relax and adults to enjoy time together.

The house is named after Mkombe Mniko, a founding Nomad guide remembered for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his connection with children. The atmosphere reflects that personal story: homely, welcoming and organised around your group rather than a shared lodge timetable. Open decks look across the landscape, while interior spaces offer somewhere to retreat in the heat of the day. A private guide, vehicle and house staff allow outings and meals to be planned around the family’s interests.

Accommodation

Rooms

Accommodation comprises two open-fronted adult rooms and two fully enclosed children’s rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The children’s bedrooms are connected to the adult areas by corridors, making the layout practical for families who want both independence and reassurance. Children’s bathrooms include baths, and an enclosed snug offers a separate space to unwind. The adult rooms retain the open safari character, with views extending towards the northern plains. We check occupancy and sleeping arrangements carefully for adult-only groups.

Food & drink

Dining

The house has dining areas inside and outside, so meals can follow the weather, the light and the day’s plans. Breakfast on the deck is an appealing way to begin before a drive, while relaxed lunches work well between pool time and afternoon outings. A dedicated kitchen team looks after your party. Children’s menus, dietary requirements and preferred meal times should be discussed before arrival, especially when the group includes different ages or a celebration.

What to do

Activities

Private game drives explore northern Serengeti wildlife country, with migration viewing an additional seasonal attraction. Your guide can balance longer outings with shorter drives and time at the house. Guided walking is another option where age and park rules allow. A star-bed experience adds the possibility of a night beneath the sky, subject to conditions and arrangements. The pool and children’s pool are valuable additions for a family itinerary that includes several camps and early starts.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

The house operates from June to mid-March. Allow enough nights to appreciate having a home in the bush rather than moving on immediately after one drive. We normally plan the itinerary around your group’s ages, preferred activity level and wildlife priorities, combining the northern Serengeti with another park or a relaxed island stay.

The right fit

Would Mkombe’s House suit you?

Who it suits

An excellent choice for families who want a private safari household, particularly when children benefit from familiar spaces and a flexible timetable. It also suits friends travelling together when the bedroom layout works for the group.

Things to consider

The house is booked exclusively, and the two children’s rooms should not be assumed to function like identical adult suites. Wildlife moves through the surrounding area. Young children require supervision around pools, decks and open spaces, and walking has separate age restrictions.
