Our take

About Kokoko Camp

Kokoko Camp is an exclusive-use expedition camp beside Ruaha’s seasonal Mwagusi River, built around intimate wildlife experiences and time outdoors. The sandy Mwagusi riverbed, forest edge and surrounding baobabs form the backdrop to a deliberately intimate stay. The camp is booked for one party, allowing the guide to respond to interests and conditions rather than follow a shared timetable. Its retractable tents, fire-cooked meals and private exploration create a distinctive way to experience Ruaha.

A senior guide and small camp team host up to six guests. The forest-edge setting and deliberately simple design suit travellers who value exploration and flexibility.

The camp’s focus is a close relationship with the guide and landscape, with a small team looking after your party. Comfortable seating beneath canvas, a fire and the surrounding riverbed create its gathering places. The name comes from the Swahili word for the Verreaux’s eagle-owl, fitting a camp where attention to the smaller details is encouraged.

Accommodation

Rooms

Three double or twin tents have mesh walls, en-suite facilities and outdoor bucket showers. Retractable roofs allow stargazing from bed.

The three tents can be arranged as doubles or twins. Bathrooms have flushing toilets and hand basins, alongside outdoor bucket showers. Mesh construction allows views through the tent, and the retractable weatherproof canopy is opened for stargazing when conditions permit. A veranda provides a quiet place to sit between activities.

Food & drink

Dining

Food is prepared over the campfire, with intimate fireside meals forming part of the wilderness experience.

Campfire cooking is central to the stay, with food prepared around the same gathering point where guests and crew exchange stories. Bush picnics keep longer days flexible, and dining in the riverbed can create a memorable evening setting when conditions allow. We would discuss dietary needs before travel.

What to do

Activities

Private walking safaris, game drives and night drives follow your interests. The camp opens June to November, taking advantage of Ruaha’s dry-season conditions.

Your guide can tailor outings around walking, tracking, birding or the broader wildlife landscape. Vehicle-based exploration and night drives create options alongside time on foot. Walking between Jabali and Kokoko can be discussed as part of a combined stay, subject to planning, fitness and conditions.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

We would suggest three nights as a starting point for a private party, giving the guide time to develop a programme around your interests. Kokoko is especially worth considering when a trip needs a few days with less structure and more exploration. Before booking, we would agree how much walking everyone wants and whether combining it with a more substantial lodge would create the right balance.

The right fit

Would Kokoko Camp suit you?

Who it suits

Our view: a compelling choice for an adventurous family with older children, a small group of friends or a couple seeking a completely private safari. It suits guests who value guiding and immersion over elaborate rooms.

Things to consider

The current operating season is June to November, and children must be twelve or older. Msembe is approximately forty-five minutes away. Wi-Fi is limited, and showers retain a safari bucket system. We would explain the accommodation style carefully and assess the exclusive-use cost for your actual group size rather than compare it with a simple per-room hotel rate.
