Our take

About Entamanu Private

Entamanu Private is an exclusive-use highland retreat on the north-western rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. It is a place to combine one of Tanzania’s best-known wildlife experiences with privacy, fresh mountain air and time spent in the surrounding landscape. The camp has its own lounge and dining room, giving families and friends a comfortable base away from a larger lodge’s communal spaces. Its position makes the Crater part of the stay from the moment you arrive, rather than simply a day excursion.

Wood, glass and stretched canvas create a camp that feels substantial enough for the exposed highland setting while remaining designed for removal. Interiors draw on Tanzanian craftsmanship and the character of the surrounding Maasai country. The effect is warm and informal, with quiet corners for reading and a main veranda facing the Crater. This is a retreat for a small party wanting their own shared spaces, with a dedicated team and an itinerary that can balance wildlife, walking and time together.

Accommodation

Rooms

The current accommodation comprises three cottages: one single-bedroom cottage and two two-bedroom family cottages. All have en-suite bathrooms, flush loos, indoor heating and verandas overlooking the Crater. The family units make the camp particularly useful for a multigenerational group, but the exact room allocation deserves attention before booking. The highland climate can be cool even when the safari elsewhere is warm; the cosy interiors and heating are an important part of the experience rather than decorative extras.

Food & drink

Dining

Your group has its own dining room, furnished with locally made details and a relaxed, light atmosphere. Meals provide an easy opportunity to come together after a Crater outing or a walk along the rim. A private setting is helpful for families with different eating times and for celebrations that need a more personal feel. Tell us about dietary needs and children’s preferences in advance, and we can agree how best to fit meals around the days.

What to do

Activities

Game drives descend to the Ngorongoro Crater, where the concentrated wildlife includes opportunities to see rhinoceros alongside other large mammals. Early access from the rim helps make the most of the morning, although the Crater remains a popular destination. Guided highland walks with a Maasai scout and armed ranger reveal a quieter side of the conservation area. Visits to neighbouring Maasai communities can add context to the landscape when arranged sensitively and with local hosts.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Entamanu Private is open throughout the year and welcomes children over five. We usually allow more than a single overnight so there is room for a Crater visit and a contrasting highland experience. It can sit between Tarangire and the Serengeti, with the onward route chosen to suit road travel or a wider flying safari.

The right fit

Would Entamanu Private suit you?

Who it suits

Best for families and small groups who want a private Ngorongoro base with proper family cottages. It is especially appealing when the highland setting, walking and cultural context matter alongside the wildlife on the Crater floor.

Things to consider

The exposed rim can be windy and cold, so pack warm layers. Exclusive use does not make the Crater itself private, and driving and park rules still apply. We confirm family room capacity and walking restrictions against each traveller’s age.
