Our take

About The Manor at Ngorongoro

The Manor at Ngorongoro brings a country-house atmosphere to a northern Tanzania safari, set on the Shangri-La coffee estate near Karatu. Its Cape Dutch architecture, gardens and cottage suites offer a comfortable contrast to tented camps in the Serengeti. The lodge is adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area rather than on the crater rim, making it a choice for guests who value space and estate life alongside a planned crater excursion.

The property occupies part of a 1,500-acre Arabica coffee estate in the highlands south of the crater. A substantial main house and carefully positioned cottages look over gardens and coffee-covered hills, with a traditional residential style that feels quite different from a safari camp. The landscape is part of the attraction: guests can return from a busy wildlife day to a quieter setting for a drink or a walk. The emphasis is on enjoying the house and grounds as well as using the lodge as a base for Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara.

Accommodation

Rooms

Nine cottages contain 18 Manor Cottage Suites, each with a private entrance and its own sun terrace. A double-sided log-burning fireplace divides the interior, while the bathroom has a Victorian-style claw-foot bath, twin basins and a rainfall shower. The suites include a writing desk, tea and coffee facilities and an electronic safe. The separate Stable Cottage is particularly useful for families: its lower floor has a master bedroom and twin bedroom, each with its own bathroom, plus a shared family lounge. Upstairs are a children’s twin bedroom, a bathroom and a television playroom. The cottage can accommodate up to four adults and two children, with bedding and occupancy confirmed when booking.

Food & drink

Dining

Meals at the main Manor house give the stay a comfortable, residential rhythm after an early safari start. Guests heading into the crater can arrange a picnic lunch rather than return to the lodge during the wildlife day. On the estate, a horse ride can be combined with a picnic prepared to your requirements. The Stable Cottage also has a separate dining area and lounge, allowing a family or group to arrange more private meals. Special dining arrangements depend on the selected package and advance planning.

What to do

Activities

A game drive into the Ngorongoro Crater is the principal wildlife excursion, usually beginning after an early breakfast. Lake Manyara National Park offers another outing, with forest, lake-edge scenery and wildlife. Closer to the lodge, guided horse riding explores the coffee estate’s hills, and an estate walk and coffee tasting can add context to the setting. Sundowners overlook the surrounding countryside, while massage treatments offer a less active option. This variety makes a longer stay useful when you want a rest day or an estate experience as well as a full crater visit.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

The Manor can be reached by road from Arusha or via a flight into Lake Manyara airstrip, followed by an approximately 40-minute transfer. It works well between Tarangire and the Serengeti. Allowing two nights usually gives a more comfortable rhythm than arriving late, visiting the crater and immediately travelling onward.

The right fit

Would The Manor at Ngorongoro suit you?

Who it suits

Couples who enjoy traditional country-house interiors, and families looking for the privacy and shared living space of the Stable Cottage. It is also appealing when an itinerary needs a comfortable pause between more intensive wildlife stays.

Things to consider

This is an estate lodge near Karatu, with no direct crater view from the accommodation. A crater visit requires a road journey and an early start. Full-board and game packages have different inclusions; private vehicles, park fees and special meals should be clarified.
