Mahale is one of Tanzania’s most distinctive journeys: forested mountains rise from Lake Tanganyika, and chimpanzee tracking takes you into a habitat quite unlike the savannah parks. The experience is physical and unpredictable. The group’s movements, trail conditions and time spent walking vary from day to day, which makes patience and a realistic pace important.
Make the Journey Worthwhile
Reaching Mahale requires careful coordination of flights and a final transfer, so we normally suggest at least three or four nights. That leaves room for more than one tracking opportunity and for time beside the lake. It is not the easiest addition to a short first safari, but it can be the centrepiece of a more adventurous trip.

When to go
June to October generally offers drier trails and easier chimpanzee tracking. The lake and forest remain beautiful outside these months, with more variable conditions.
