Serian South is a seasonal tented camp set on the southernmost edge of the short-grass plains in the Serengeti. From mid-December to May, when the herds migrate back for the birthing season, it offers a rare opportunity to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary events from a remarkably private, off-grid camp away from the crowds.
Serian South belongs to the family of safari camps managed by Alex Walker’s Serian — a collection known for intimate scale, personal guiding, and a deep-bush experience. The camp is deliberately simple and low-impact, with elegant safari-style tents, communal mess and lounge areas, and a philosophy that emphasises connection with wilderness, walking safaris and cultural encounters, often with local hunter-gatherer guides.

Accommodation
There are six spacious traditional safari tents (including a family/two-tent suite), each with en-suite facilities — a flush toilet and bucket shower — plus classic safari beds, Persian rugs and comfortable furnishings. The tents are built for comfort but retain a rustic, camp-style feel; they’re positioned to make the most of the sweeping views over the plains where the wildebeest calving grounds lie.
Food & drink
Meals are served “en famille” in a candle-lit mess tent where guests gather to share stories of the day. Dining is relaxed, convivial and designed to feel like home in the bush. On clear nights, bush dinners and sundowners under the stars provide a romantic and atmospheric alternative.
What to do
The core appeal of Serian South lies in its safari opportunities: guests receive a private 4×4 vehicle and dedicated guide for game drives by day and night. During the migration and calving season, it’s a front-row seat to thousands of wildebeest and zebra, dramatic predator-prey dynamics, and glimpses of large carnivores such as lions and wild dogs. Walking safaris - often led with local Hadzabe guides - add a deeper, more immersive way to experience the bush. For the more adventurous, the camp can also arrange fly-camping under the stars or guided long-walks.
Planning your stay
The Serengeti changes character through the year. Southern plains, central valleys, western corridor and northern river country are different choices; we position a camp for your dates and interests rather than promising a particular herd movement.
A two- or three-night stay gives time to settle in, while extra nights can be valuable if the migration is a priority. Consider how flights and onward connections affect time in the field.
