Our take

About Serengeti Explorer

Serengeti Explorer is a contemporary lodge in the Nyaboro Hills, overlooking the south-central Serengeti from an elevated position. It offers a different kind of safari stay from a small tented camp, with a broad range of rooms, several dining venues and activities that continue after the game drive finishes. The outlook is a central part of the experience, but so are the pool, photography facilities and opportunities to spend a more varied day at the lodge.

An elevated, two-tier main building makes the most of the open views, with shared terraces and a 35-metre infinity pool. The design combines an African lodge character with contemporary furnishings and a substantial choice of facilities. Reva Wellness Centre offers treatments, while a gym and yoga terrace allow guests to keep a different rhythm between wildlife excursions. The lodge’s scale supports experiences that are unusual at smaller camps, including a dedicated photography studio and a purpose-built hide beside a waterhole. It is particularly useful when members of the same party want different ways to spend the middle of the day.

Accommodation

Rooms

The published inventory comprises 68 Savannah Rooms and six suites. Savannah Rooms measure approximately 46 square metres, with king or twin beds, en-suite rain showers and a private balcony with a daybed. They include a writing desk, tea and coffee facilities, Wi-Fi and charging points. Savannah Suites provide approximately 120 square metres, with a separate lounge, a bath and shower, and a larger private balcony. The two-bedroom Chief’s Suite is a duplex with a king bedroom and a twin bedroom, both en suite, making it a useful family option. Interconnecting and accessible accommodation is available, but the exact layout and quantity should be confirmed because published descriptions vary by category.

Dining

Acacia is the main restaurant for breakfast and dinner, with live cooking stations and a wide viewing terrace. The outdoor Boma offers a more intimate evening setting, while Kisimani serves lunch beside the pool. Divai provides a reserved five-course wine-paired dinner in the cellar, giving food-focused guests a different experience from the main restaurant. Agama is the terrace bar for a drink with the view, and Kahawa serves coffee and pastries for early safari starts. Special dining experiences have their own arrangements and may cost extra.

What to do

Activities

The waterhole photographic hide is available to guests who want to watch wildlife quietly at close quarters. A resident photographer can help with composition and editing in the studio, with camera rental charged separately. Guided drives remain the main safari activity, and exclusive vehicles can be pre-booked. Specialist outings include guided bush walks and a ranger-accompanied rhino-tracking excursion in the Moru Kopjes area. Stargazing uses a dedicated platform and telescope when skies permit. Yoga, treatments and the gym add a gentler alternative for guests taking a break from drives, while the current programme also lists an outdoor cinema.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Seronera airstrip is approximately a 45-minute transfer from the lodge, following a flight from Arusha of around an hour. Explorer fits into a northern itinerary with Ngorongoro and can be combined with another Serengeti camp when season or wildlife priorities call for a different location. A longer stay gives more opportunity to use its varied facilities.

The right fit

Would Serengeti Explorer suit you?

Who it suits

Families, mixed-interest groups and travellers who want substantial lodge comforts alongside safari. Photographers may particularly appreciate the hide and studio, while guests who enjoy dining choice and wellness facilities have more options here than at a small canvas camp.

Things to consider

With 74 rooms and suites, Explorer has a larger-lodge atmosphere. It is in the south-central Serengeti rather than a Mara River crossing camp. Specialist activities, private guiding and wine-cellar dining need confirmation, and room category matters for families or accessibility.
