Our take

About Lamai Private

Lamai Private is a small, exclusive-use lodge in the northern Serengeti, designed for families and friends who want their own corner of the national park. Set around the Kogakuria Kopje, it combines a broad view over the plains with a dedicated camp team and private safari arrangements. It makes an appealing base for a group that values time together as much as wildlife viewing, with a swimming pool, generous decks and space to settle into a comfortable daily rhythm.

The private lodge sits separately from Lamai’s main eight-room camp. Its design works with the boulders and the contours of the kopje, keeping the surrounding landscape central to the experience. Natural materials and locally made furnishings give the interiors a relaxed, considered character. Having your own lounge and dining space changes the feel of a safari: there is room for conversations to run late, for quieter afternoons and for different generations to spend time together without sharing communal areas with other guests.

Accommodation

Rooms

There are four open-fronted rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, a veranda and views across the Serengeti. The open design brings birdsong and the sounds of the bush into the room, while the decks provide somewhere to read or watch the changing light. This is a private safari lodge rather than a collection of hotel suites. We check the exact sleeping arrangements and family configuration against the ages and preferences of everyone in your group before reserving the whole property.

Food & drink

Dining

Meals are served in your own camp mess, with an attentive team looking after the group. The setting encourages sociable breakfasts, unhurried lunches and dinners that become part of the evening rather than an interruption to it. Discuss food preferences and children’s requirements in advance so the kitchen can plan properly. A private camp allows more flexibility around when the group eats, particularly when a longer wildlife outing takes you away from the lodge.

What to do

Activities

Private game drives explore the northern Serengeti, where resident predators and plains game reward time spent away from the busiest sightings. When the migration is in the north, the Mara River is within driving reach; a crossing can never be promised. Guided bush walks offer a different perspective on tracks, plants and the kopje landscape, subject to age restrictions and local conditions. Back at camp, the pool and private decks are a good reason to leave some afternoons free.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Nomad lists Lamai Private as open from June to mid-March. We recommend several nights rather than a short stop, especially for a group travelling by bush aircraft. Match the season to the wildlife experience you want, then build the rest of the journey around it. Ngorongoro or Tarangire can add a contrasting landscape before a beach extension.

The right fit

Would Lamai Private suit you?

Who it suits

Best for multigenerational families, close friends and travellers who want the northern Serengeti with dedicated shared spaces. It is particularly attractive when members of the group enjoy different paces and want a comfortable base to return to.

Things to consider

Exclusive use comes with a group commitment, so the price per person depends heavily on occupancy. The bedrooms are open-fronted, wildlife moves freely around the camp and river crossings remain unpredictable. We confirm walking eligibility and the room plan before booking.
