Our take

About Kiba Point

Kiba Point is a private safari retreat beside the Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park. It is reserved for one group, with four open-fronted cottages and a dedicated team looking after your stay. The combination of river views, private plunge pools and varied safari activities makes it an appealing alternative to a trip built entirely around game drives. It suits families and friends who want to explore a wilder part of southern Tanzania while enjoying the freedom of a camp to themselves.

The main lounge and dining area form the social centre of the retreat, with a larger swimming pool nearby. The design opens directly to the landscape rather than enclosing you behind conventional hotel walls. Between outings, the river and its wildlife give the camp a strong sense of place. Having your own guides, vehicles and boat allows the day to be shaped around the group: a quieter morning, a longer excursion or simply an afternoon watching the Rufiji go by.

Accommodation

Rooms

There are four open-fronted cottages overlooking the river, each with a private plunge pool. En-suite bathrooms have flush loos and indoor and outdoor showers, with hot and cold running water. The rooms are spacious, airy and deliberately immersed in the bush, so they will appeal to travellers comfortable with an open safari style. We discuss the layout, group size and any particular mobility or privacy requirements before recommending the retreat, rather than treating it as a conventional resort.

Food & drink

Dining

Dining is private and sociable, with meals arranged for your party in the main area or outdoors when conditions allow. There is scope to shape the day around activities rather than rushing back to a set communal schedule. Evening meals can become a relaxed gathering after sundowners, while picnics are useful on longer outings. Dietary requirements and any special occasion should be discussed ahead of time so the camp team can prepare within the practical limits of its remote setting.

What to do

Activities

Game drives provide access to Nyerere’s large mammals, while guided walks focus on tracks, plants, birds and the smaller details of the bush. Boat outings on the Rufiji bring a different perspective, particularly for watching hippos, crocodiles and river birds from the water. Fishing and exploratory excursions may also form part of a stay, subject to conditions. An overnight fly-camping experience can add a simpler night beneath the stars for guests who want to go further into the wilderness.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Nomad lists Kiba Point as open from June to November, with a minimum guest age of eight. We recommend several nights to take advantage of the range of activities. It pairs well with Ruaha for a varied southern safari, followed by Zanzibar or another Indian Ocean island if you would like time at the beach.

The right fit

Would Kiba Point suit you?

Who it suits

Best for groups who want their own camp and a safari that includes water as well as wildlife drives. The private cottages and pools make it particularly attractive for friends or extended families who value both shared time and personal space.

Things to consider

The cottages are open-fronted and wildlife is part of the setting. Boat routes, walking and fly-camping depend on river levels, weather and safety conditions. Group occupancy affects the price per person, and we confirm the activity plan rather than promising every option on every stay.
