Our take

About Roho ya Selous

Roho ya Selous sits near Lake Nzerakera in Nyerere National Park, combining conventional wildlife drives with the waterways of southern Tanzania. The lake, palm-lined waterways and surrounding bush create a different environment from Tanzania’s northern grasslands. Hippos and crocodiles are part of the waterside experience, while land-based outings seek the park’s broader wildlife. Its location and programme make it a varied safari base where time on the water is as much part of the story as driving.

Open lounge and dining areas look towards the surrounding landscape. A swimming pool provides a welcome break during warm afternoons.

The camp occupies a small peninsula overlooking a waterway between Lake Manze and Lake Nzerakera. Canvas roofs and slate floors keep the main spaces open and relatively cool, while a firepit provides a gathering point in the evening. Refreshed woven lighting, soft furnishings and recycled-glass details add texture to the accommodation. Shaded seating and the pool give guests quieter spaces between outings.

Accommodation

Rooms

Eight stretch-canvas tents include a family tent. En-suite bathrooms have indoor and outdoor showers, and an above-bed cooling system helps on hot nights.

Double and twin arrangements are available beneath stretch-canvas roofs. Each tent has a private veranda and en-suite facilities with hot indoor and outdoor showers. The above-bed cooling system focuses on the sleeping area rather than functioning as full-room air conditioning. Family accommodation should be secured early for school-holiday dates.

Food & drink

Dining

Fresh meals are prepared by the local kitchen team, using ingredients from nearby communities where possible.

The kitchen uses fresh produce and local ingredients where possible. Meals are normally communal, with separate tables available on request. Bush picnics keep outings flexible, and evening dining in the open-sided main area retains the waterside atmosphere.

What to do

Activities

Game drives, boating and guided walks reveal different sides of Nyerere. Fishing and birdwatching add variety to a stay, with activities dependent on seasonal conditions.

Boating brings hippos, crocodiles and waterside birdlife into the experience, while walking and driving explore the surrounding land. Catch-and-release fishing can also be arranged. The variety is central to the camp’s appeal, and exact activity availability follows water levels and the guide’s assessment.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

We would normally recommend three or four nights so you can try more than one safari activity without rushing. A drive, a boat trip and a walk each reveal different details, and leaving time between them makes the holiday feel less repetitive. In a southern itinerary, a stay here can complement Ruaha before continuing to the coast.

The right fit

Would Roho ya Selous suit you?

Who it suits

Our view: particularly good for couples and families wanting variety beyond vehicle-based game viewing. It suits a first southern Tanzania safari as well as a repeat visitor drawn to lakes and birdlife.

Things to consider

The usual operating season is June to mid-March. The current property page lists Siwandu airstrip, approximately thirty minutes away; flight routings should be reconfirmed for your dates. Children from five are welcomed, but walking has a higher age threshold. We would discuss the heat, cooling system and seasonal activity programme before selecting room arrangements.
