Our take

About Crater’s Edge

Crater’s Edge is a luxury tented lodge on the north-eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Set among acacia trees, its elevated suites look into the caldera, making the landscape part of the stay from the moment you arrive. It offers a comfortable highland stop between the northern parks and the Serengeti.

Canvas, teak floors and a restrained colour palette give the lodge a classic safari character. The setting is as important as the interiors: private decks face the crater, while the lounge and library provide inviting places to settle between excursions. Its position close to Lemala Gate is useful when planning a crater visit, although the complete descent and safari timings depend on the day’s arrangements.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Accommodation comprises 17 insulated luxury tents, with double, twin and two-bedroom family options. The stand-alone suites are raised above the slope, with canopied beds, a sitting area, a freestanding bath and a private wooden veranda. A spotting scope on the deck brings distant wildlife and the crater landscape into closer view. Family layouts and any additional-bed requirements should be confirmed when choosing the accommodation.

02

Food & drink

Dining

Meals combine Tanzanian influences with international dishes and seasonal ingredients. Two dining spaces offer crater views: an indoor restaurant with a fireplace and an outdoor setting for evenings around the fire. À la carte meals and a selection of house beverages are included in the lodge’s accommodation package, with premium drinks charged separately. Private terrace dining can be arranged for a quieter evening.

What to do

Activities

Game drives into Ngorongoro Crater are the main focus, with opportunities to look for lion, elephant, buffalo and other resident wildlife. Guided walks in the surrounding highlands, visits to Maasai communities, bush breakfasts and sundowners offer variety beyond the vehicle. Activities depend on permissions, conditions and the arrangements made for your stay; walking takes place in appropriate highland areas rather than on an unrestricted crater-floor safari.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

Two nights can provide time to enjoy the lodge and a properly planned crater visit before continuing to the Serengeti or Tarangire. We arrange the guiding, protected-area fees and transfers as part of the wider journey, rather than assuming they are included in an accommodation-only rate.

The right fit

Would Crater’s Edge suit you?

Who it suits

Couples and families looking for a polished tented stay with crater views and access to the Ngorongoro highlands.

Things to consider

The crater rim can be cold, particularly in the early morning, so warm layers matter. Discuss steps and raised walkways if mobility is a concern. The lodge’s accommodation rate excludes game drives, park and concession fees and airstrip transfers; your proposal will specify the complete arrangements.
