Our take

About Charlie, Ruaha

Charlie in Ruaha is Nomad’s private expedition camp for a more active exploration of southern Tanzania. It moves lightly through quieter country near the river, adding walking and a close connection with the landscape to a safari that might otherwise concentrate on vehicle outings. Small tents and a simple outdoor camp are part of the attraction. It suits travellers who want excellent guiding and time in real wilderness, and who are happy to exchange some conventional lodge comforts for a more immediate bush experience.

Ruaha’s dry-season landscape brings together river edges, open bush and woodland, with baobabs and jackalberry trees adding character to the walks. The camp is able to move within the area over several days, keeping the journey responsive to conditions. This creates a useful contrast to a permanent base such as Kigelia: begin with classic wildlife viewing, then step into a lighter camp and a slower, more observant style of safari. The exclusive setup keeps the experience focused on your own small party.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Charlie uses up to four lightweight A-frame tents for a private party of two to six guests. There are two shared bush bathrooms, with safari bucket showers; this is intentionally more basic than an en-suite tented lodge. The camp is arranged for the journey rather than built as a fixed resort. On a suitable dry night, the tent flysheet may be removed for a view of the stars. Comfortable sleep matters, but the emphasis is on travelling lightly and keeping the wilderness close.

Food & drink

Dining

Meals are prepared by the camp team and served in the bush, with a simple canvas shelter providing shade when needed. Dining is relaxed and private, often becoming a chance to discuss the day’s discoveries with your guide. The practical limits of a mobile camp mean that food preferences should be agreed well before travel. A cold drink by the fire and dinner outdoors are part of the expedition’s atmosphere, with the setting providing much of the occasion.

What to do

Activities

Guided walking makes room for the details that are often missed from a vehicle: tracks, changing vegetation, bird calls and evidence of the animals that have passed before you. Game drives can complement the walks and extend the day’s range. In the dry months, wildlife is drawn towards available water, giving the guide useful clues about where to explore. The day can also include quiet time in camp. The balance of walking and driving is planned around your interests, fitness and current conditions.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

The published operating season here is July to October. Charlie welcomes guests aged sixteen and over. We plan the length, walking pace and connections as part of a tailored itinerary, rather than treating the camp as a standard overnight stop. Tell us about your walking experience and interests early so the route can be designed sensibly.

The right fit

Would Charlie, Ruaha suit you?

Who it suits

Best for a small, active party looking for a private expedition and a different perspective on safari. It is particularly suitable when time outdoors, specialist guiding and freedom from a busy lodge schedule matter more than a swimming pool or elaborate room facilities.

Things to consider

This is a simple expedition camp with shared bathrooms, not an entry-level version of a fully serviced luxury lodge. Sites and activities depend on conditions and safety decisions. Guests need to be comfortable walking in the bush; fitness, seasonal access and exact arrangements are checked before confirmation.
