Our take

About Arusha Coffee Lodge

Arusha Coffee Lodge offers a gentle introduction to Tanzania, with plantation cottages scattered among coffee bushes on the western edge of Arusha. The setting feels green and residential, making it a comfortable place to recover from an international flight before travelling into the northern parks. It is equally useful at the end of a safari, especially when an overnight stay separates a bush flight from your journey home.

The lodge is built around the original plantation house, which dates from the early twentieth century. Its lounges and dining spaces retain the feel of a country home, with fireplaces for cooler evenings and terraces opening into the gardens. An enclosed swimming pool provides a quiet place to settle in after travelling. Coffee is part of the experience throughout, from the surrounding estate to the colours and textures used in the rooms. This is a working-estate setting on the edge of a busy city, with plenty to discover without starting a long safari drive.

Accommodation

Rooms

There are 30 plantation houses, offered as Plantation Rooms and Plantation Suites. The rooms have an in-room log fire, an en-suite bathroom with a shower and bath, and a veranda looking into the coffee gardens. Suites provide more generous living space and a private terrace with outdoor furniture and a log burner. Their bathrooms include a rainfall shower and a large bathtub. Tea and coffee facilities, a safe, bathrobes and a minibar are provided, with some facilities differing by category. For families, we would confirm the appropriate extra-bed arrangement and location of the chosen rooms rather than assume that every cottage has the same layout.

Food & drink

Dining

The Grill Room, inside the main house, offers a more formal restaurant setting, with a menu combining international cooking and locally sourced produce. The Bistro is the relaxed alternative, with indoor and garden terrace seating, its own bar and coffee station, and dishes including pizzas, pasta, fish and salads. A garden buffet lunch is another option, while cakes and estate coffee suit a lighter stop between outings. Breakfast can be taken before setting out on safari. Picnic lunch boxes can be arranged for a travelling day, and room service is available when a quiet evening feels more appealing.

What to do

Activities

The guided bean-to-cup tour follows coffee through growing, harvesting, drying and roasting, giving the surrounding estate a purpose beyond its attractive setting. At Traders Walk, guests can browse crafts and visit Shanga, where artisans with disabilities create items using recycled materials. The lodge can arrange visits to Arusha’s cultural and tanzanite attractions, as well as excursions into Arusha National Park for forest scenery and wildlife. Peaberries offers massages, manicures and pedicures beside the pool. With a single overnight, it is usually better to select one short activity and leave room to rest rather than pack the arrival day.

Planning your stay

Build this into your Tanzania journey.

The lodge is close to Arusha Airport, useful for onward flights to the northern parks. Kilimanjaro International Airport is approximately an hour to an hour and a half away by road, depending on traffic. We often use it before Tarangire, Ngorongoro or the Serengeti, choosing the departure time around your arrival and recovery needs.

The right fit

Would Arusha Coffee Lodge suit you?

Who it suits

A comfortable first or final safari night, particularly for travellers who appreciate gardens, good dining choices and an activity that can be enjoyed without leaving the estate. The Plantation Suites are worth considering when you want more space to unwind.

Things to consider

Arusha Coffee Lodge is an arrival base rather than a wildlife camp. Extra excursions, meals and transfers should be included explicitly in your quotation. A late arrival followed by an early bush flight leaves limited time to enjoy the estate.
