The herds are usually spread across the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Calving broadly peaks in February, bringing excellent predator activity, but this is a dispersed landscape rather than a single moving column.
As the long rains ease, the herds generally move through the central Serengeti towards the western corridor. The exact route and pace vary, and resident wildlife can be as rewarding as the main movement.
The herds are broadly in the northern Serengeti and wider Mara ecosystem. Mara River crossings are dramatic but sudden and cannot be guaranteed. A longer stay in a well-positioned camp gives you the best realistic chance without sacrificing the rest of the safari.
